It's John Pizzarelli's Birthday (4/6/24)
The date of this episode falls on John Pizzarelli’s 64th birthday, which leads the obvious choice for the opening number. Besides recordings by John, we will also hear songs this week from Jessica’s first four albums. Originally released by PC Classics in the early 1980s, they are now being re-released by Center Stage Records. So it’s a double celebration this week on Radio Deluxe.
Easter Again (3/30/24)
John & Jessica are spending the weekend in the city this year, probably because they want to show off their finery in the Easter Parade along Fifth Avenue. And I wonder if Jessica will be wearing her bonnet, the one with all the frills upon it, most likely created by Henri Bendel. Let’s listen in and see what we can find out.
Spring, Spring, Spring (3/23/24)
John & Jessica welcome Spring 2024 up at the lake house. It’s there where they can best observe all the predictable things that plants and animals do when springtime arrives. And, because it’s taking place at the Deluxe Cabin, it’s all accompanied by songs about spring – and there are many.
Almost Equinox (3/16/24)
The vernal (or spring) equinox occurs – and spring begins – at the same moment around the globe, at 03:06 UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) this Wednesday, March 20th. In North America, it happens on Tuesday at 11:06 PM EDT and 8:06 PM PDT. So this weekend, John & Jessica present the last official program of winter, just before the sun crosses the equator into the northern hemisphere. It’s quite astronomical.
A Little Bit of Everything (3/9/24)
Young artists, old artists, old recordings, new recordings, a song from 1929, a song from 2023. This week’s show is A Little Bit of Everything.
It’s Not Quite Spring, but It’s March (3/2/24)
If the groundhog was correct a month ago today, we are just a couple weeks away from the start of spring. But the arrival of March makes many of us think that it’s already spring (or autumn if you’re south of the equator). John & Jessica are back at the lake house, admiring the crocuses, and listening to many of their favorite songs.
Maddie’s in the House (2/24/24)
The role of Jessica Molaskey in today’s program is played by Maddie Pizzarelli. Luckily, we’re a radio show big enough to have an understudy on staff while Ms. Malasky continues her acclaimed role in The Connector at New York’s MCC Theater. Ms. Pizzarelli, meanwhile, fills in seamlessly as John Pizzarelli’s comic and musical partner, spinning the platters, telling the tales, and plugging upcoming appearances.
Getting Up to Speed (2/17/24)
The Pizzarelli calendar is approaching pre-covid levels again. Last week, John had several concert dates in California and Arizona and, in the week ahead, he’ll be in St. Louis and Fort Lauderdale. Meanwhile, Jessica continues her role in The Connector in New York, a play that has been extended for another month. They’re spending more time in the city, although they go up to the cabin for fun.
The Osgood File (2/10/24)
Broadcaster, author, poet, and musician Charles Osgood hosted CBS News Sunday Morning for 22 years on television and was heard daily on The Osgood File for 46 years on CBS Radio. In recognition of his passing, on January 23,2024, Radio Deluxe is rerunning segments from its Episode #101, which first aired November 3, 2007. As the guest, Mr. Osgood tells stories, talks about music, and makes music by singing and playing piano, along with John Pizzarelli & his Trio (with Larry Fuller and Martin Pizzarelli) and Jessica Molaskey. So, as a treat, you can still see Charlie on the radio today.
Just off the Boat (2/3/24)
John Pizzarelli talks like he just got off the boat, telling stories of all the things that happened during The Jazz Cruise as he sailed through the Caribbean Sea. Meanwhile, Jessica Molaskey, who opens in a new musical theater production on Monday, has her own stories, and both of them combine to tell the stories behind the making of a new album by Steven Pasquale and John. Lots of stories and lots of music to hear this week on Radio Deluxe!
A Smiling Face, a Fireplace, a Cozy Room (1/27/24)
John & Jessica are spending a weekend in the woods. Attracted by a smiling face, a fireplace, a cozy room, our host couple sits by the fire chatting and playing music, including one of John’s all-time favorite songs, “My Blue Heaven.”
Anchors Aweigh (1/20/24)
John & Jessica got together just before going their separate ways this week, Jessica to the theater and John out to sea for the annual Jazz Cruise. Some of the stars of the floating festival are in the Radio Deluxe spotlight, to give you a taste of what you're missing--or not (maybe you're listening on board, through the wi-fi). If so, bon voyage!
Deluxe Redux: Terry Teachout (1/13/24)
Writer Terry Teachout died two years ago today, on January 13, 2022, at age 65. The author, critic, biographer, playwright, stage director, and librettist was one of our earliest guests on Radio Deluxe, recorded on May 13, 2006. He talked with John & Jessica about the arts, his career, and some of his favorite recordings, which he brought with him. Today, in remembrance of Terry, we present that interview in its entirety.
January 6th Again (1/6/24)
January 6th is observed every year as a significant day on the Christian calendar. The day is also known as “Three Kings Day,” “Little Christmas,” or “Epiphany.” The eve of the date is known as “Twelfth Night,” falling 12 days after Christmas Eve. It often goes unnoticed, but for the past three years, January 6th has become the name of a news event that we hear about often. But the music on today’s program focuses more on peace on earth, joy to the world, and of course love. Always love songs:
A Peaceful Transition of Years (12/30/23)
On New Year's Eve, we may see what look like bombs bursting in air, but it's actually a celebration focusing on positive thoughts for the year ahead. The holiday's theme song, "Auld Lang Syne," is about good times fondly remembered, an important sentiment, but the fireworks and champagne corks are popping for the future, the start of a new year that we are facing together. We do it peacefully and cooperatively, with a willingness to do what is expected of us to help make the world a better place. Here's to a happy 2024!
Christmas 2023 (12/23/23)
John & Jessica are back in the deluxe living room of their deluxe Manhattan apartment high above Lexington Avenue. Just like Christmases past. And like people all around the world, they are beginning their celebrations while at the same time preparing for for the big day on Monday. The music on this week’s show is mostly traditional, performed by a mixture of new and traditional artists. We hope all of our listeners are enjoying the holiday season and we are grateful that you are spending part of it with us.
The Annual Tree Trimming (12/16/23)
A couple weeks before Christmas, the Pizzarellis decorate their Christmas tree together. Every year they unwrap the same ornaments and tell same stories behind them, but that’s what makes it a family Christmas tradition. And like all Pizzarelli traditions, it’s a accompanied by music. So enjoy the music and the stories and feel free to help them decorate.
Deeper in December (12/9/23)
As Christmas draws near, John & Jessica are back in Manhattan, home of such famous holiday locations as the Rockefeller Plaza, Rado City Music Hall, Macy’s and Gimbels, FAO Schwartz, and that Deluxe Apartment high atop Lexington Avenue. That’s where you’ll find the best record collection in New York City, which includes such holiday and other favorites as:
The First of Five December Weekends (12/2/23)
There are five weekends in this December, which will be useful because it's such a jam-packed month, involving food, gifts, and celebrations...and always music. We’re so happy you joined the party going on now at the Deluxe Cabin!
Thanksgiving Weekend 2023 (11/23/23)
The Radio Deluxe show has been around so long that it has acquired its own holiday traditions. The songs John & Jessica unpack are like favorite Christmas ornaments that come out every year. There are songs of gratitude, songs of home and family, and songs about food. We give thanks to you for your support and invite you to enjoy the feast!
Some Mancini Music (11/18/23)
John Pizzarelli recently returned from Miami, where he participated in an early celebration of the 100th birthday of composer Henry Mancini. So in honor of that, John & Jessica spotlight a few Mancini songs during this week’s show, which originates from their deluxe living room in Manhattan. Join them as they spin discs and prepare for Thanksgiving.
Artists and Icons (11/11/23)
Here’s how the game is played: The radio host (usually Jessica) names an artist that is popular among Radio Deluxe listeners. The contestants (you and John) then try to name the artist’s most iconic song. The host then reveals the song she thinks is (or wishes were, or is her favorite) iconic song by the artist. If a contestant’s answer matches the host’s answer, the contestant wins! Every winner, or loser or non-contestant, then gets to listen to the song! It’s that simple.
Standards Time (11/4/23)
John & Jessica celebrate this weekend, when we go back to standard time, by playing the “standards.” Of course they do that every week, but this gives us an obvious new reason to do it. We’ll hear standards by artists of old (like Hoagy, Mel, and Ella) and by artists of late (like Samara, Emmet, and Nikki–all born in the 90s) and many others in between. Enjoy your November; may it be deluxe!
How I Hate to See October Go (10/28/23)
This is the time between post-summer from pre-winter. Johnny Mercer knew the feeling of this time of year as he wrote the lyrics to what became the song “When October Goes.” After Johnny died, his widow, Ginger, discovered his melancholy poem and gave it to Barry Manilow to set to music. Share the feeling with John & Jessica, who are spending a weekend by the lake, in the Deluxe Cabin, as October is about to leave us.
A Playlist with a Twist (10/21/23)
In the midst of their Carlyle run, John & Jess relax with some of their favorite records at one of their favorite places, the Deluxe Cabin by the lake.
Last Call for September Songs (9/30/23)
John & Jessica transition from September to October (while moving from Saturday to Sunday) this weekend at the Deluxe Cabin. So, if you have any favorite songs that mention September, October, autumn, fall, or Indian summer - or even Saturday or Sunday - get your requests ready.
It’s Autumn Officially (9/23/23)
The season officially changed at around midnight, Friday night. Autumn officially began at the moment of the autumnal equinox at 2:50 AM EDT, or 11:50 PM PDT. It’s time to celebrate the changes in the weather and the color of the leaves with songs about autumn and September. So order up a pumpkin spice latte or an equinox deluxe and enjoy our first show of fall!
Talent in Triplicate (9/16/23)
In the theatre, they’re called “triple threats,” an actor who can also sing and dance. John & Jessica put the spotlight on some performers who have earned the title, such as Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire, and Gregory Hines. You may feel talented just being a good actor, but that’s just the third of it.
Hanging on to Summer (9/9/23)
It’s still summer. But you can tell it’s late summer by all the Halloween displays in the stores (early summer has all the Back-to-School displays). As a kid, John was always sad to see summer end, so he and Jessica remain at the lake this weekend, wringing out as much of the summer fun and sun as possible. And you’re invited to join them at the Deluxe Cabin.
Cheerful Little Earfuls (8/26/23)
Instead of hearing so much about hurricanes, floods, wildfires, war, crime, and corruption, Jessica suggests we switch from the news channel tune to the cheerful channel. She and John set the example this week with a lineup heavy on happy songs. And we hope they do you good!
A Midsummer’s Road to Dreamland (8/19/23)
As the title implies, this week’s episode is as sophisticated, elegant, and hip as works by Shakespeare, Mendelssohn, Arlen and Mercer. And, of course, Pizzarelli and Molaskey. Enjoy today’s deluxe music in a deluxe summer setting.
An Oscar Peterson Birthday Celebration (8/12/23)
Canadian pianist and composer Oscar Peterson would have tuned 98 years old on August 15th. That doesn't go unnoticed to John & Jessica.
August Arrives (8/5/23)
It's the first weekend of August and John & Jessica are lakeside at the Deluxe Cabin, pulling favorite music tracks out of the clear mountain air.
The Late, Great Tony Bennett (7/29/23)
The world lost one of the greatest singers of all time on July 21, 2023. So this week, John & Jessica pay tribute to Tony Bennett in the best way they can. They tell personal stories about him, express their gratitude for the joy he brought to the world, and play a few of what they consider his best recordings.
A Soft Summer Day (7/22/23)
On a mid-summer’s day, John & Jessica are relaxing at the deluxe lake house, listening to restful music a la George Shearing and many of the artists he recorded withover the years. Before the show went to air, but after it was released to affiliate stations, the world learned the sad news that Tony Bennett, one of the most deluxe singers of all time, had passed away. So there won’t be any mention of Tony today, but listen for a special tribute next week. In the meantime, enjoy a relaxing, soft summer day.with Radio Deluxe.
In the Middle of the Middle Month of Summer (7/15/23)
Summer (at least summer vacation) takes place during June, July, and August. So here we are in the middle of July, the middle month of summer, as John & Jessica carry out their summer activities at their summer house by the lake. That, of course, includes walking, swimming, paddling, and spinning records. Come join in the fun!
Spotlight on Mandel (7/8/23)
It’s one week after Canada Day, and the weekend after July Fourth, and summer is in full swing. John & Jessica are at the Deluxe Cabin, up by the lake, doing summertime things. As usual, they are playing yours and their favorite music, and are reminded of the very talented composer and arranger Johnny Mandel, who passed away at this time of year three years back. So enjoy John & Jessica and their music from the middle of summer.
Neighboring Holidays (7/1/23)
Canada and the USA are both celebrating this weekend. Not only are the two countries geographical neighbors, their national holidays are also very near one another on the calendar. The United States commemorates the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, while Canada commemorates the signing of the British North American Act, creating the Canadian Confederation, on July 1, 1867. A portion of each country's citizenry, known as "Radio Deluxe listeners," will be celebrating by listening to many of their favorite songs, as they do every week, but this time they do it with greater purpose and extra enthusiasm.
First Show of Summer (6/24/23)
It’s the first weekend after the summer solstice, which always comes on the weekend after Father’s Day and before Independence Day.It is now officially summer north of the equator, so get ready as, during the weeks ahead, we roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy songs of summer.
Dad’s Days (6/17/23)
Most people celebrate Father’s Day one day a year, but here at Radio Deluxe, we dedicate the whole weekend to Dad. John & Jessica celebrate the occasion with songs by some talented, musical dads, including the longtime Pizzarelli patriarch, Bucky Pizzarelli. Best wishes from all of us at Radio Deluxe to all the dads of all our listeners and to all the listeners who are dads or who celebrate dads!
June, the Moon, and Arthur Schwartz (6/10/23)
It’s June, and John & Jessica turn their thoughts to the moon, rivers, rainbows, graduation, and Arthur Schwartz. Many of today’s songs are about, or witten by, one of the topics just mentioned. In summary, we’re in a summery mood.
Welcoming June in the Usual Way (6/3/23)
On the first weeknd of June, John & Jessica are at the lake cabin, in anticipation of the fast-approaching official start of summer. It’s time to take down the storm windows dust off the canoe, and put fresh oil on the turntable. Then they take turns playing favorite records (a year-‘round tradition), which they’ve selected with you in mind.
Deluxe Favorites (5/27/23)
John & Jessica are playing the role of what they used to call, in the record industry, the “A&R man.” That’s the “artist and repertoire” person who matches the artists with the songs (and don’t worry, they’re now called.the “A&R person”). So today, John & Jess play their favorite artists performing their favorite songs. Somethng we all like to do, but usually when we’re alone in the car or cranking up the home stereo.
Deluxe in Triplicate (5/20/23)
Every week, John & Jessica create interesting double plays by putting together two songs that have something in common. This week, John stretches it to three songs that have common themes, such as.songs related to Benny Goodman, songs from Oklahoma!, old-time songs, and songs associated to Nat King Cole. Plus the usual singles and doubles and stories and laughs.
Mom’s Weekend (5/13/23)
John & Jessica honor their mothers and yours and modthers all around the world and you too, if you’re a mom (we know that many of our listeners are). Enjoy the music, the conversation, and this very special weekend.
I Remember Don Sebesky (5/5/23)
Composer, arranger, conductor Don Sebesky died one week ago, at age 85. A personal friend of John Pizzarelli, he wrote arrangements for both John and Jessica Molaskey, along with Michael Feinstein, Maynard Ferguson, Paul Desmond, Andre Kostelanetz, Carmen McRae, Nancy Wilson, Roberta Flack, Wes Montgomery, Earl Klugh, and many others. He also wrote scores for Broadway shows, television series, and commercials. This week, John exposes just the tip of the Sebesky iceberg.
Jazz Year 1954 (4/29/23)
John Pizzarelli has pointed to 1954 as one of his favorite times for jazz music. Contemporary artists such as Sarah Vaughan, Clifford Brown, Max Roach, Chet Baker, the Dave Brubeck Quartet, Mel Torme, Shorty Rogers and many others were being heard on new 33 1/3 RPM, long-playing (LP), microgroove, vinyl, high-fidelity records. It was known as the “Golden Age of High-Fi” and, in fact, the records were played on something commonly called a hi-fi (stereos didn’t appear until later in the decade). So join John & Jessica around their turntable, tuner, and amplifier as they listen to some music that still sounds as good as ever.
Stage & Screen (4/22/23)
Just released, on April 21st, is Stage & Screen, the latest album by John Pizzarelli, star of stage, screen, and Radio Deluxe. In this episode, you’ll hear several tracks from the album, which features John on guitar and vocals, Isaiah J. Thompson on piano, and Michael Karn on double bass. It marks the 40th anniversary of John’s recording career, which began in May 1983 with the release of his debut album, I’m Hip (Please Don’t Tell My Father. And even though he’s no longer 23, the year is ’23 and John’s as hip as ever.
Guitars Galore (4/15/23)
Today John Pizzarelli features several musicians who have mastered the instrument that he knows the most about:: the guitar. And not just the the featured instrumentalists, but the accompanists who make our favorite singers sound even better. All these guitarists may not have familiar names, but they are all well-known and respected in the world of music, including the likes of Mundell Lowe, Charlie Christian, Dave Barbour, Tony Mattola, Joe Pass, Al Caiola, and of course, Bucky Pizzarelli.
Easter Weekend 2023 (4/9/23)
We’re in the midst of the spring religious holidays. This weekend is Easter Sunday, which comes during Possover time and the nearly month-long Ramadan celebration, and of course it’s Festivus for the rest of us.Sunday morning, the famous Easter Parade will take place on New York’s 5th Avenue, as it has for over a century (pictured is the 1900 parade). Irving Berlin wrote a very familiar song about it, which will be heard throughout this week’s program. Happy holiday to you and your family from everyone at Radio Deluxe!
April Come She Will (4/1/23)
April came she did, just as Simon and Garfunkel had predicted. The month is a popular subject for songs, including "April Showers," "April Love," "April Fools," “I’ll Remember April,” and the one about "April in Paris, chestnuts in blossom, and holiday tables under the trees.” The arrival of April and spring give us many reasons to rejoice. No wonder there are so many songs about this time of year, many of which you'll hear on this week's episode.
Spring Has Sprung (3/25/23)
It’s the first weekend of spring and John & Jessica are back at the cabin, lakeside. There are, of course, many songs about spring, but today our host couple has selected a few that are less-frequently played.
It’s Nice to Go Trav’ling (3/18/23)
We’re on the verge of spring, which begins officially on Monday, and John and Jess are looking forward to their post-winter, post-pandemic travels. t’s the perfect way to slip in some traveling songs while, at the same time, wishing happy birthday to John’s travel agent David Bernhart. They also play many other favorite recordings, both new and old, to while away the day and shake away any cabin fever.
Joni, Wes and George in the Spotlight (3/11/23)
Three artists are honored in the Radio Deluxe spotlight this week: Joni Mitchell, Wes Montgomery, and George Shearing. Singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell is the 2023 recipient of the Library of Congress Gershwin Pize for Popular Song; guitarist Wes Montgomery is honored for the 100th anniversary of his birth; and pianist-composer George Shearing is being remembered by John Pizzarelli in his current show at the Carlyle Hotel in New York City. John is also expected to be honored with his own centennial celebration in 2060.

Snowing and Shearing (3/4/23)
The name of this week's episode sounds like it could be the title of an Australian bush ballad, but it's not. This week John & Jessica find themselves at the Deluxe Cabin during a late winter storm. And as they watch the snow fall, they listen to some of their favorite music by George Shearing. Good music, a warm fireplace, and knowing that spring is just around the corner all combine to make a very pleasant, deluxe day...

Winter Is Waning, or Maybe Still Snowing (2/25/23)
It’s the last weekend of February. The weather is hard to predict as Winter reluctantly loosens its grip, but signs of spring are all around us. The leaves and blossoms are returning, along with baseball. MLB Spring Training games begin this weekend, Daylight Saving Time begins two weekends from now, and Saint Patrick’s Day and Saint Joseph’s Day (when the swallows return to Capistrano) are the following weekend. Spring itself begins right after that, on Monday, March 20th (although the southern hemisphere is a whole different story). John & Jessica are enjoying the waning days of winter at the Deluxe Cabin by the lake. As usual, they’re talking about music and musicians and meatballs. And you’re welcome to join them.
Live at The Egg (2/17/23)
John & Jessica performed recently in upstate New York at The Egg. If you haven’t heard of that venue, it may sound strange to you. Most performing arts centers are named after their geographic location or a local dignitary, a benefactor, or a corporate sponsor. But the one in Albany is named for the shape of the building. It’s the shape of an egg. More like an egg cup, really, but that name would sound even stranger. A lot fun shows have taken place there since it opened in the 1970s, but this is definitely one of the most recent ones. It stars John Pizzarelli and Jessica Molaskey, along with pianist Isaiah J. Thompson, bassist Jay Leonhart, violinist Aaron Weinstein, guitarist Matt Munisteri, and the multi-talented Maddie Pizzarelli. The opening segment of this episode includes John & Jessica’s salute to prolific songwriter Burt Bacharach, who died February 8th at age 94.
Super Sunday Baseball (2/11/23)
Although a lot of devout baseball fans will be watching the Super Bowl, the true significance of Super Sunday for them is that the baseball season is about to begin. The first spring training games will be played on February 24th, just twelve days after this weekend's big spectacle in Arizona. To honor the boys of summer, John hosts his annual baseball tribute on this week's program. Why not?, Everything you need to know going into Big Game LVII will have been said.
Wintertime in a Summer Cabin (2/4/23)
As a cold Arctic blast hits the Northeast states., John & Jessica experience the weather up close by spending some time at their lakeside cabin. They remain comfortable, l however, because the electricity remains on, they have plenty of propane and firewood, as well as a good supply of delicious food, delightful beverages, and tasty music.
It’s a Double-Play Weekend! (1/28/23)
Radio Deluxe presents lot of double-play, play, plays this weekend, starring David Crosby, Jackiie & Roy, Raechel & Vilray, the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra, Domenick Cortez, Tea for Two, and more! Double your pleasure, double your fun this week with John & Jessica!
After the Cruise (1/21/23)
Ahoy! The Jazz Cruise just finished its 2023 voyage aboard the GTS Celebrity Millenium. As usual, there was a very impressive list of jazz artists aboard, including Radio Deluxe hosts John Pizzarelli and Jessica Molaskey. Many of the players and singers are featured on this week’s show, along with tales of the high seas.
Our Newest Winter (1/14/23)
This winter that has escorted us into the new year is, in many ways, unlike any previous ones. We’ve had extraordinary amounts of snow in the Midwest, record flooding in California, and unusual tornado activity in Alabama. And we’re not yet halfway through the season! John & Jessica, meanwhile, are safely tucked away in the Deluxe Cabin, enjoying the glassy-smooth lake outside and the warmth of the fire and the music inside.
Pizzarelli Birthdays (1/7/23)
Every year, the Pizzarelli family has a double birthday to celebrate, for guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli and his daughter-in-law Jessica Molaskey. On January 9th, Bucky Pizzarelli (father of John Pizzarelli) was born in Paterson, New Jersey, in 1926 and Jessica Molaskey (wife of John Pizzarelli) was born in Wolcott, Connecticut, an undisclosed number of years later. From the late 1990s until Bucky’s passing in 2020, the family would combine the birthday celebrations, usually with food and music.
The Year Changes Mid-Weekend (12/31/22)
Most of our radio listeners catch our show on Saturdays or Sundays. So,for most people, this willl be the last episode they hear in 2022 or the first one they hear in 2023. The year changes at midnight Saturday, the exact midway point of the weekend. John & jessia appreciate your joining them in celebrating their 19th New Year’s show on the air. Thank you from all of us for however many years you’ve been you’ve been listening and supporteing the program, and happy New Year to all!
Santa Claus Has Come to Town (12/24/22)
Just like Lulu, Santa Claus is back in town. Or as John likes to say, “Santa has returned to the community.” We heard repeated warnings that he was coming, but now he’s really here. Let the bells ring and the carolers sing, as we go back in time with a song by Bing.
'Twas A Week Before Christmas (12/17/22)
It’s a week before Christmas and John & Jessica have invited some of their best friends from the 1950's over to help celebrate, They brought out their best pilsner glasses, poured the beer and put some records on the player. You can join them if you’re old enough.
It’s Beginning to Look Like Christmas (12/10/22)
Some retailers and radio stations began our yearly tradition over a month ago, but now it’s becoming much more real with every Christmas card we write. Some old timers are recalling a Christmas 70 years ago, when Hopalong boots and a pistol that shoots were their wish, as John & Jess are recalling other holiday memories through their songs and stories. So grab a cup of nog and enjoy the fun!
Winter’s Comin’ On (12/3/22)
Last week, during the first snappy weather, all the folks got together and headed down to Uncle Bill’s, down among the hills. And just like the cider, winter will soon be comin’ ‘round. December has already begun and, just like most things, that’s cause for a party at John & Jessica’s plac, by the lake, down among the hills.
Another Year, Thanks to You (11/26/22)
Happy Thanksgiving from coast to coast and beyond, like the other places where expatriated Americans are celebrating that special holiday! This year, John & Jessica are carving their turkey at the Deluxe Cabin, and they invited us to drop by!
Thanksgiving Prep (11/19/22)
After completing a sold-out, two-week run at the Café Carlyle, John and Jessica are looking a short distance down the road to the next item on their agenda: preparing for Thanksgiving 2022.
Guesses for Jess’s Next Song (11/12/22)
On this week’s program, Jessica names a well-known recording artist and John tries to guess what recording that artist is best known for, at least in Jess’s mind. John doesn’t always agree with Jessica’s opinion, but it’s always fun to hear the next song she plays. And you can play along at home.
A New and Old Music Mix (11/5/22)
Something old, something new, and something middle-aged too. This week John & Jessica celebrate the arrival of November with an assortment of music from dear-departed favorites, like Hoagy, Mel, and Ella; to new favorites born in the ‘90s, like Samara, Emmet, and Nikki; along with a wealth of talent in between.
October Goes (10/29/22)
This weekend lies right on the line that divides post-summer from pre-winter. Johnny Mercer knew that as he wrote what became the lyrics to the song “When October Goes.” After Johnny died, his widow Ginger discovered the poem and gave it to Barry Manilow to set to music. It describes perfectly this time of year, which John & Jessica are spending by the lake, in the Deluxe Cabin.
Today Will Be a Good Day (10/22/22)
Jessica shows her optimism by selecting Dianne Reeves’ recording of “Today Will Be a Good Day” as the show opener. It’s a song that was written by Dianne for her 2008 album When You Know, and an indicator of what’s to come during this session of music, laughs, and chit-chat at the Deluxe Cabin.
October’s Middle Weekend (10/15/22)
Not every month has a middle weekend, but this year October contains five full weekends. That’s more time off work to spend enjoying the colorful fall foliage and and an extra episode of Radio Deluxe, which this week originates from both the Deluxe Cabin and the Deluxe Living Room! John and Jessica are at the lake watching the leaves fall and anticipating the first snow, but a few days earlier they were in Manhattan chatting with Eleri Ward, who dropped by their apartment, It seems that this young singer, songwriter, guitarist, pianist, and record producer who dropped by is a rising young star in the music industry. But you can decide for yourself.
Rhode Island Is Famous for Pianists (10/8/22)
John & Jessica are happy to be back in their Deluxe Living room in Manhattan this week, as they shine the radio spotlight on two accomplished jazz pianists, both from Rhode Island. Dave McKenna (born in Woonsocket in 1930) and Mike Renzi (born in Providence in 1941) reached the top echelon of the music industry. McKenna played with Woody Herman, Charlie Ventura, Eddie Condon, Stan Getz, Gene Krupa, and many others; while Renzi is known for his work with such great singers as Mel Torme, Peggy Lee, Lena Horne, Maureen McGovern, and Tony Bennett & Lady Gaga, in addition to being music director for Sesame Street for ten seasons. John Pizzarelli, of course, worked and talked Red Sox baseball with both of them.
October Arrives (10/1/22)
From their lakeside perch, John & Jessica observe the arrival of October. Leaves change color and fall to the ground, the lake water cools, and birds head south. Everything goes as planned and right on schedule: And just as predictable are the sounds of pleasing music emanating from the Deluxe Cabin.
It’s Late September (9/24/22)
It’s late September (and I really should be back in school) and we're just a couple days past the autumnal equinox. John & Jessica are enjoying a beautiful autumn weekend at the lake house and, as usual, they provide us with a perfect soundtrack for the occasion.
Triple Threats (9/17/22)
In showbiz, the term "triple threat" is applied to someone who can act, sing, and dance. Some of the most famous triple threateners are featured in this week's Radio Deluxe episode, including Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire, Gwen Verdon, Gregory Hines, and others. But the list goes on and on, including the casts of almost every show that contains singing, dancing, and a plot, everyone from Frank Sinatra to Bugs Bunny.
A Pleasant Day in Putnam County (9/10/22)
It's that time after Labor Day, but yet not yet officially autumn. It's that pleasant “lame duck” time of summer in Putnam County, New York. The part without the vacation crowds. And John & Jessica are making the most of it, enjoying music and pleasant conversation in the serenity of the Deluxe Cabin.
Labor Day 2022 (9/3/22)
This year, John & Jessica celebrate Labor Day weekend in their deluxe Manhattan flat. No swimming or barbecues, but lots of food, music, and celebrating nevertheless!
Happy Songs (8/27/22)
As Jessica suggests, there are times when we should turn off the news and just think happy thoughts…and listen to happy songs. Here are some songs that make John & Jessica happy.
It’s Still Summer (8/20/22)
We’re down to the last half of August, but John & Jessica are still rolling out those lazy-hazy-crazy days of summer, starting today with that seasonal favorite by Nat Cole. Our host couple is enjoying time at the lake before John heads out on his California tour. If you can’t meet up with him on the road, you can still join them both at today’s record hop at the deluxe cabin!
Staying Home (8/13/22)
August is usually a busy time for touring musicians, but John Pizzarelli has found some rare home time, right between Europe and California. As he and his wife Jessica enjoy New York’s most deluxe living room, they turn it into a celebration for Oscar Peterson, Tony Bennett, and others. Join the party!
Home Again (8/6/22)
After John was jet-setting around Europe and Jessica was acquiring a new hip, our two hip jet-setters have reunited in New York’s most deluxe living room to continue their radio series. Almost live, from high-atop almost Lexington Avenue.
The Fifth Weekend This Month (7/30/22)
The fifth weekend of the seventh month is a perfect summertime example of John & Jessica’s radio show, famously featuring swingin’ conversation, no real preparation, plus warm air and water temperatures and impeccable musical selections. It’s all here on Radio Deluxe!
A Shearing Caravan (7/23/22)
Today John Pizzarelli spotlights music by his former friend and collaborator, the late pianist George Shearing. This episode, the title of which is borrowed from Shearing’s 1955 MGM album, featuring a caravan of many of the musicians who have worked with Sir George over the years, including Nancy Wilson, Mel Torme, Dakota Staton, Wes Montgomery and his brothers, Joe Williams, and Nat King Cole. Plus the usual suggestions from Jessica Molaskey and the summertime, lakeside banter between John & Jessica.
In the Shank of the Summer (7/16/22)
If your vacation was planned for the last two weeks of July, your hard-earned, yearly respite begins now. Pack the family into the car, head down the road, and give the kids something they can write an essay about when school resumes in the fall. John calls it the shank of the summer and, as usual, he and Jessica provide the music to get us all through it.
July 1st Through 4th (7/2/22)
Call it a long, patriotic, holiday weekend, starting Friday with Canada Day and continuing through Monday, Independence Day. That’s a lot of hamburgers and potato salad, brass bands and fireworks. Enjoy the celebration, however you’re spending your weekend!
The Summer Wind Blows In (6/25/22)
It’s now official; it’s now summer! In North America, the time for sodas and pretzels and beer officially began last Tuesday. And in the U.S. and Canada, the biggest celebrations of the season will be happening next weekend. And we’ll bring it to you. Stay tuned for complete coverage here on Radio Deluxe.
Father’s Day (6/18/22)
Father’s Day never goes unnoticed at the Pizzarelli place. John, of course, will play music in honor of his famous, beloved dad, Bucky in this episode, as he himself will no doubt be honored by his adoring, adult children, Maddie and John IV. It all makes for a fun time at the cabin on this special day on last official weekend of spring.
Judy’s Centennial (6/11/22)
One of Hollywood’s biggest stars was born on June 10, 1922, in Grand Rapids, Minnesota. Frances Ethel Gumm became Judy Garland before becoming a world-famous performer in the movies, on concert stages, and on records. On this 100th anniversary of her birth, John & Jessica highlight a few of their favorites from Judy’s extensive recording career, along with their usual hi-jinx.
Schwartz & Fields and Back from Brazil (6/4/22)
After his first Brazilian tour in over three years, John returns to the deluxe living room in New York City, where he and Jessica soon fall back into the radio routine. One of the souvenirs John brought back from Brazil was this photo he took from the stage of one of his favorite music clubs, Bourbon Street in Sao Paulo. Besides Brazilian music and musicians, the topics of discussion turn to the songwriting team of Arthur Schwartz & Dorothy Fields, Maddie Pizzarelli’s recent, long-delayed college graduation ceremony, a whatever else the currents lead them to.
A List of Faves (5/28/22)
What’s the best way for John & Jessica to spend a holiday weekend? Of course, it involves playing reocrds. Because their other job – other than making music – is playing recordings of of some of the best music ever created. And the best recordings are a matter of preference. Which they call favorites.Or faves, if you’re hip. Which they are. So here’s a list of faves.
Triple Shots (5/21/22)
There is something magic about the number three. It can come in the the form of triple plays, triple deckers, triple scoops, or triple shots (from your barista, your bartender, or your deluxe radio host). John created some musical themes this week, all of which contain three songs: songs related to Benny Goodman, songs from Oklahoma!, old-time songs, and songs related to Nat King Cole. Plus, he and Jessica serve up the usual welcome blend of single- and double-plays.
Before Going Back to Brazil (5/14/22)
After a two-year, COVID-caused hiatus, John Pizzarelli and his trio are finally going back to Brazil this week. They won’t be performing in Rio this time, but they will be on a tour that includes Sao Paulo, Brasilia, and the old cobble-stoned city of Paraty (pictured). We’re looking forward to the full report.
Mother’s Day Weekend 2022 (5/7/22)
Mother’s Day is celebrated on different days in different parts of the world, most commonly in March o May. The second Sunday in May is the most popular day to celebrate Mom, as it is in the United States, Puerto Rico, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Aftrica, Ukraine, Gemany, Denmark, Switzerland, China, Hong Kong, and many other countries. In the United Kingdom and Ireland, the day is celebrated on the fourth Sunday in Lent (which was March 27 this year). In Mexico, it is celebrated every year on May 10. John & Jessica wish all mothers – and everyone who ever had a mother – a very happy Mother’s Day.
Deluxe Music from the Deluxe Living Room (4/30/22)
Spring has arrived outside the window of John & Jessica’s deluxe Manhattan living room. And with it come the birds, the blossoms, and the joy reflected in this week’s show. The spotlight falls on Ella & Louis, Django & Stephane, Kenny
Rankin, lyricist Dorothy Fields, and some favorite accordion jazz. Enjoy the weekend that transports us from April to May, while John & Jess enjoy another weekend in their favorite city.
A Noisy Day on Lexington (4/23/22)
Noise in the big city is usually accepted without a second thought, unless you’re recording a radio show in your dining room. Jackhammers on the street, helicopters overhead, and a tinkling piano in the next apartment are all things you expect on Lexington Avenue. They may sound like they’re complaining, but John & Jessica are actually just glad you be back in Manhattan, sharing some of their favorite music with you.
Easter Weekend 2022 (4/16/22)
After spending two years at the Deluxe Cabin, John & Jess are once again spending Easter at the Deluxe Living Room, high atop Lexington Avenue. And they wish everyone celebrating Easter or Passover a very happy holiday weekend.
April Come She Does (4/8/22)
Come she does, every year at this time. And she proves to be one of the most popular months among songwriters, as will be demonstrated in this week’s Radio Deluxe episode. And because the weather is so nice, and John & Jess have longed to be back in the city, and because the Deluxe Cabin has no roof, the next several shows will originate from New York’s favorite and most deluxe living room. Please join the party.
A New York Revival (4/2/22)
Not only has the ice disappeared, the birds returned, and the plants begun sprouting at the Deluxe Cabin, but New York City has also come back to life. And John & Jess couldn’t be happier. On today’s program, they celebrate with music dominated by themes of New York and springtime. Welcome to the revival.
The Lake Got a Sparkly Glow as It Thawed About You (3/26/22)
During this first full weekend of spring, the ice on the lake is turning into sparkly water. John & Jessica welcome the arrival of spring with many of their favorite songs, several of which relate to the new season. The warm weather and their anticipation of getting back to work on the road again raise their hopes for better and more routine days ahead.
It Was Nice to Go Trav’ling (3/19/22)
Even though conditions have improved, John & Jessica are still playing it safe with the virus and by spending most of their time at the Deluxe Cabin. But after two years of isolation, they frequently talk longingly about the parties they used to attend and the jazz trips they used to take, flying to Europe, Asia, and South America, and cruising the Caribbean. Maybe that's why John was eager to honor the birthday this week of his travel agent, David Bernhart, with a deluxe travel triple play.
Sure Signs of Spring (3/12/22)
The spring ritual of turning our clocks ahead one hour occurs on Sunday morning. Baseball’s delayed spring training schedule begins on Thursday, March 17th, a familiar date, of course, because it’s Nat King Cole’s birthday and a day much celebrated as St. Patrick’s Day. That’s closely followed by St. Joseph’s Day on the 19th, celebrated as the time when the swallows return to the old mission San Juan Capistrano. All these events are sure signs of spring, although none of them actually occurs in spring, which begins this year on March 20th at 11:33 AM EDT. But by then, we’ll be more than ready for it.
In Like a Lion (3/5/22)
They say that March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb, and we hope that’s the case this month, weather wise and otherwise. Snow continues to fall in the forest on this first weekend in March, aggravating John & Jessica’s spring fever, along with their chronic cabin fever.
Music in a Cold, Worried World (2/26/22)
It’s been a long, cold, lonely winter for John & Jessica, much of it spent isolated in their cabin (luckily, though, a deluxe one). But in just a few days, they’ll turn the page on the calendar and spring will come into view. Because winter has a time limit. Unfortunately that’s not true for the pandemics and war we’re experiencing now. Through it all, though, Radio Deluxe will continue delivering our music, which just might give some people a little needed relief.
Winter in a Summer Place (2/19/22)
John & Jessica are back at the cabin during this very wintry winter. Lucky for them, the Deluxe Cabin has been winterized (part of what makes it deluxe). We're sure the original architect, back in the '30s, did not anticipate a COVID pandemic, but the old cabin has served its inhabitants well. And that allows our hosts to serve their fans well, as they broadcast favorite music from their house in the snowy woods.
Hearts and Icicles (2/12/22)
We're calling it Valentine's Day Weekend, the days just before Monday's holiday associated with love. It could be a time for getting away to a romantic bed & breakfast, although this year it includes the Super Bowl game. John & Jessica, however, focus on the aspects of romance. Do you think they can come up with a whole two hours of love songs? Tune in and find out.
Snowy and Cold (2/5/22)
As a big storm moves through the Northeast, John & Jessica find refuge in their lakeside cabin in an area that has served for decades as a favorite summertime getaway. But now they’re hunkered down with a good supply of firewood, propane, food, and beverages. And of course, they never run low on music.
A Terry Teachout Tribute (1/29/22)
Terry Teachout liked the entertainment arts in all their forms. He expressed his passions by working as an author, critic, biographer, playwright, stage director, and librettist. On May 13, 2006, Terry visited Radio Deluxe and talked about the arts, his career, and some of his favorite music, which he brought with him. After Terry died, on January 13th at the age of 65, John & Jessica decided to honor him by replaying, in its entirety, the conversation they had with him way back on the 24th Radio Deluxe program. Terry’s insights have helped us all appreciate the elements that make life beautiful.
A Wintry Mix (1/22/22)
Weather forecasters use the term “wintry mix” to describe weather that is a mix of rain, snow, sleet, and other conditions that generally make us cold, wet and uncomfortable. Although on this January day, we apply the term to music that is a mix of Peggy Lee, Nancy Wilson, Freddy Cole and others that generally make us warm, happy, and wanting for more.
In Memory of Marilyn (1/15/22)
Today we pay tribute to prolific lyricist Marilyn Bergman, whom we lost last Saturday. She, along with her husband Allen Bergman, created some of the most memorable songs of six decades. John & Jessica became friends with the Bergmans, and you may remember when they were guests on Radio Deluxe, Today you’ll hear many of their stories and many of their songs.
A Quiet Birthday (1/8/22)
January 9th is a big day in the Pizzarelli family, it being the birthday of both Bucky Pizzarelli and Jessica Molaskey. John & Jess are enjoying a quiet celebration this year because they really don't have any good alternative. This is the second year that they'll be celebrating without Bucky and, because of COVID, they won’t even be able to celebrate without friends. But Bucky and Jess will both be honored today, with stories and songs. More celebrating here: https://bit.ly/3q8Bq3g
Welcome, 2022 (1/1/22)
This week, on the first day of the new year, at the Deluxe Cabin in the woods, John & Jessica welcome 2022, along with their daughter Madeleine. They’ve selected some music that represents some of the artists we lost in 2021, an original song by Maddie, and other favorites appropriate for their New Year’s Day celebration. Happy New Year to all!
Santa Claus Is Here (12/25/21)
We took the liberty of modifying the title of John Pizzarelli’s Christmas (on its way to becoming a) standard, “Santa Claus Is Near.” We did that because Santa actually is here, in the Deluxe Cabin and on the show! And miraculously, he’s his usual jovial self in spite of an exhausting night of delivering toys and goodies to homes all around the world. It’s such an honor that he makes his last stop this year a visit with John & Jessica and our dear Radio Deluxe listeners.
Tree Trimmin’ Again (12/18/21)
It’s a family tradition at the Pizzarelli house: they take turn unwrapping a stored ornament, tell the story behind it, read the newspaper it was wrapped in, and hang it on the tree. Every year it’s the same ornaments, the same stories, and even though they wish they’d change, some all-too-familiar articles in the newspaper. As in most households, the holiday traditions are comfortably familiar.
It’s Beginning to Look Like Christmas (12/11/21)
“It’s Beginning to Look Like Christmas” was the original title of the famous song written in 1951 by Meredith Willson, which eventually became known as “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas” (more consistent with its lyric). However you say it, it’s an apt title for this episode of Radio Deluxe with John Pizzarelli with a date exactly two weeks before Christmas Day (and a palindrome, by the way). John & Jessica are in their deluxe living room this week, enjoying the buzz and the beauty of Christmas in Manhattan, as they listen to some of their favorite songs – holiday-themed and otherwise – on the record player.
Remembering Sondheim (12/4/21)
This week, John & Jessica present a heart-felt tribute to their friend and one of the most important figures in American musical, Stephen Sondheim, who died November 26th at age 91.
Thanks, Dave (11/27/21)
On this Thanksgiving weekend, we honor pianist, songwriter, and singer Dave Frishberg, a longtime friend of the Radio Deluxe family whom we lost last week, on November 17th. If you’re not familiar with Dave, his songs will probably be
familiar, which you’ll discover in this episode. John & Jessica are spending the holiday at their deluxe cabin, and as usual, they’ll be playing the songs that have become Thanksgiving traditions on Radio Deluxe, performed by Bing Crosby,
Michael McKean, and Michael Feinstein. We’re happy you can join us as we celebrate with music, feasting, and giving thanks for the many things we’re grateful for, including Dave and and his music.
Approaching Thanksgiving (11/20/21)
It’s November 20th and we again join John & Jessica at the Deluxe Cabin by the lake, a place that has provided them refuge for the past 20 months. The holiday season, ready or not, is under way, beginning officially with Thanksgiving (at least in America) five days from now. On next week's show, we'll get a full report on the Pizzarelli festivities, tempered by a tribute to our friend Dave Frishberg. The talented pianist, singer and songwriter passed away November 17th in Portland, Oregon, after this episode was recorded.
Best Known for the Recording… (11/13/21)
Well, enough chit-chat, it’s time to play the game! The rules are simple: Jessica names a singer, John guesses what recording that artist is most famous for, and then Jessica plays the song she thinks it is. Her answer is the correct one.
I'm in the Mood for Twistin' (11/6/21)
It’s been over a month and a half since John & Jess started isolating, and even though the virus seems to be on the run, the deluxe couple is still staying safe and sound at the deluxe cabin. The safe part is the vaccines and masks and the sound part is the outstanding sounds they provide us with every week. And for some reason, John seems to think that no eclectic jazz music show would be complete without some music to do the twist by. Or maybe all that isolation has made him believe it’s the 1960s again. But, like the actual dance craze, John’s interest in twisting today comes and goes fairly quickly.
When October Goes (10/30/21)
Johnny Mercer, before he died, wrote a song lyric about the time of year when landscapes – and sometimes mindsets – change from the bright colors of autumn to the bleak shades of winter. Johnny’s ode to old age was never set to
music during his lifetime; but afterward, Barry Manilow composed the melody that completed the song “When October Goes.” This week, John & Jessica capture the spirit of this milestone of time.
Eleri Pays a Visit (10/23/21)
This week’s show originates from both the deluxe cabin and the deluxe living room! John and Jessica are now back at the lake, anticipating the first snow as they watch the leaves fall. A few days earlier, they were in the city, making their long-awaited return to Birdland! While they were there, Eleri Ward dropped by their apartment to talk about her career and “A Perfect Little Death,” her new album, featuring songs by Stphen Sodheim. John & Jess believe the singer, songwriter, guitarist, pianist, and record producer is a rising young star in the music industry. Hear for yourself.
Rhode Island Is Famous for Pianists (10/16/21)
John & Jessica, in their first broadcast from New York City in over a year and a half, feature two accomplished jazz pianists, both from Rhode Island.
John Pizzarelli, of course, worked and talked Red Sox (and probably PawSox) baseball with both of them.
Making Music, Raking Leaves (10/9/21)
It’s the picture-perfect time and place for a fall show. John & Jessica will soon be out raking those autumn leaves that drift by their window, but right now they’re inside making music, both by playing records and by playing guitar.
Like Broadway, October Is Back (10/2/21)
After a delay of 27 months, the Tony Awards ceremony reappeared last weekend, signifying the glorious return of shows to Broadway. October, on the other hand, returned right on time, yesterday. John & Jessica celebrate both traditions with their choice of songs and comments on this Radio Deluxe episode.
September Breezes and Vocaleses (9/25/21)
Vocalese is a jazz form that replaces instrumental solos with lyrics. They aren't always strong lyrics, but they enable singers to perform melodies that were originally performed by jazz instrumentals. The wind is blowing at the lake on this first official weekend in autumn and Jessica makes a comment that John looks "very eccentric" and then snaps this photo. So that's how we ended up with this episode's title and the graphic, with a breeze, some vocalese, and a wacky outfit.
September Songs (9/18/21)
It’s officially the last weekend of summer, even though we’ve been in an autumn state of mind since Labor Day. But there’s certainly no dispute that it’s September, and that’s what influences John & Jessica’s mood and music this week. Join them at the lake as the leaves fall, the water cools, and thoughts become more contemplative.
Lingering Summer (9/11/21)
The summer of 2021 won’t make its seamless transition to autumn for another eleven days, but in the meantime, John & Jessica are taking advantage of the lingering summer weather to make the most of their time at the lake. They also can’t help but think and talk about their beloved New York City on this 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attack. Adding a mix of music by immortal jazz greats like Sony Rollins and Charlie Parker, along with today’s greats like Jeff Hamilton and Kurt Elling, help brighten a beautiful mid-September day.
Labor Day Weekend (9/4/21)
It’s Labor Day weekend and John & Jessica are at the lake house, celebrating the folks who brought us the weekend and, in this case, the three-day weekend! Although we hear more about mattress sales than the labor movement these days, everyone seems to know that this is unofficially the last weekend of summer. It’s a time to go for a final swim before the water gets too chilly, and maybe even find an occasion to wear that linen suit before it gets packed in mothballs for winter. It’s time to say goodbye to the vacation neighbors, like on the last day of summer camp, and bring out the first of the many songs about autumn.
Artist Trademarks (8/28/21)
Certain songs are inseparable from certain artists. You may think that one particular version of a song is the definitive version. By the same token, you can't think of a particular artist without thinking of a certain song. Those songs are know as an artist's signature song, defining song, or trademark song. But it's not true just for top-40 artists, jazz and traditional pop singers have their trademarks too, like the ones that John & Jessica explore on this week's episode of Radio Deluxe.
As Summer Winds Down (8/21/21)
The days are subtly getting shorter. In the higher elevations, leaves are beginning to change color. Back-to-school sales have been sold. And John & Jessica are venturing back on the road, with hopes that the new normal will again look like the old normal. The radio show, however, has remained consistent even as the world around us has changed, providing a constant flow of good music, engaging conversation, and needed companionship.
Bright and Breezy, Summertime Easy (8/14/21)
With all the worry and heartbreak around us, John & Jess have decided to feature songs on the brighter side. They figure we need some happy, bouncy, and amusing songs to give us the proper summer vacation attitude.
Learning to Like Cole Porter (8/7/21)
John & Jessica have admitted that there is surprisingly little Cole Porter music in their repertoire. But because Mr. Porter was one of the most prolific contributors to the American songbook, his songs are, of course, frequently requested. This week, in an effort to find out what all the to-do is about, Jess has decided to listen more closely to the songs of Cole Porter. John, meanwhile, is exploring contemporary artists who have discovered the music of the American songbook, some of it by Porter. The overlapping themes create an interesting and enjoyable music mix on this week’s episode.
The Weekend of July and August (7/31/21)
This weekend begins in July and ends in August. It's the most popular vacation time for many families and John & Jessica are spending it at their cabin by the lake. It may seem less like vacation time to them, however, since they've been there for a year and half. But they're happy to be there, and happy to have you join them. As usual, they’ll provide plenty of music, highlighted by a salute to Bob Dorough and a live performance by John.
We’re Hearing Shearing and Friends (7/24/21)
The spotlight falls on George Shearing this week, and the artists with whom he made some iconic albums. Were the albums the result of George convincing the best singers and instrumantalists in the business to work with him, or was it a case of the best artists wanting to work with one of the best jazz groups around? Either way, the results were outstanding, as you will hear. Besides the eight tracks featuring Sir George, John & Jess also feature some Bob Dylan songs, performed by three jazz singers, as well as Dylan himself. And you’ll hear a couple preview tracks from a yet-to-be-released album by Kate McGarry,
exclusivly here on Radio Deluxe with John Pizzarelli & Jessica Molaskey. See Shearing here: https://bit.ly/36WDAIS
A Midsummer Day’s Music (7/17/21)
After performing moving chores in the big city, John & Jessica are back to a simpler life at their cabin by the lake, living the summer routine, playing summer songs, and having fun.
Following the Fourth (7/10/21)
On the first weekend following the Fourth of July holiday, John & Jessica are enjoying summer activities at the Deluxe Cabin, playing music for all their friends in Radioland. Many of the songs this week were composed or arranged by Johnny Mandel, in honor of the anniversary of Mandel’s passing (on June 29, 2020, at age 94). Enjoy the music; the summer’s still young.
Fourth of July 2021
It’s the Fourth of July weekend in the USA, a very busy time at the rivers, lakes, seashores, swimming pools, parks, patios, and backyards across the land. And as you might guess, John & Jessica are celebrating America’s 245th birthday with some of their favorite American music. Meanwhile, many of us are shocked that the country got this old so fast. Wasn’t it just a few years ago that we were celebrating the bicentennial?
Summer’s Here (6/26/21)
Summer has returned to the Deluxe Cabin, something John & Jessica have been looking forward to since early winter. Today they celebrate with summer songs, including the annual playing of this episode’s title song by James Taylor, along with others from Mel Torme, June Christy, Frank Sinatra, and others. Radio Deluxe wishes new season’s greetings to all!
Father’s Day 2021 (6/19/21)
Because of Father's Day, this week's playlist includes several tracks by talented fathers and their their talented progeny, such as Ellis and Wynton Marsalis, Jay and Carolyn Leonhart, and of course Bucky and John Pizzarelli. Also included are are many other carefully-selected songs for you to enjoy Father's Day by.
The Sweet Center of the Year (6/12/21)
As June approaches July, we begin to experience the very sweet center of the year. It’s a time John & Jess welcome, as they enjoy the weather, the woods, and the lake outside their Deluxe Cabin. While inside, as always, they enjoy the music. This week they shine the spotlight on John Coltrane, Matt Dennis, and other favorite artists and songs. Enjoy the sweetness of it all, here on Radio Deluxe!
One Song Leads to Another (6/5/21)
On a pleasant June day, John & Jessica call songs with no particular theme in mind. But one song leads to another, which lead to many more. And with only their good tastes as a guide, the music becomes thoroughly enjoyable and the time flies by.
A Show for Hanly! (5/29/21)
Sadly, nobody can call Hanly anymore. Prominent lawyer Paul Hanly, friend of John, Jessica, and the Radio Deluxe show and the subject of John’s song “Somebody Call Hanly,” died last week at age 70 of a rare form of cancer. His life and musical tastes are celebrated in this week’s episode.
Irving Berlin's 133rd (5/22/21)
Great American songwriter Irving Berlin was born 133 yeas ago this month. He lived for over 101 of those years, writing an estimated 1500 songs, a few of which are featured in this week’s show. John & Jess also pay tribute this week to the outstanding clarinet and sax player Ken Peplowski. Add other tasteful and timely songs and you’ll understand how it’s all here on Radio Deluxe.
Playing Favorites (5/15/21)
Here in the middle of May, John & Jessica play their favorite records in this episode, but they soon realize their time will run out before the recordings do. So look for sequels on this theme, and in the meantime, enjoy Part 1.
Mother’s Day 2021 (5/8/21)
It’s Mother’s Day weekend and John & Jess play favorite songs of their own mothers, a song written about a mother, a mother-son duet, and a song that a famous mother sang for her children. John also pays tribute to recording engineer Al Schmitt, who died last week, with a set of three recordings he helped create.
